Enrique Breccia

Enrique Breccia was born in Buenos Aires in 1945.

A draughtsman, painter, scriptwriter, in 1967 he painted murals in the Fundación Cardiológica Pombo de Rodríguez (Buenos Aires); he then executed works in woodcuts, oil paintings, tempera and watercolour.
He demonstrated his talent at a very young age by drawing La Vida del Che in 1968, a biography of Che Guevara written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld, published and translated in 8 countries.
He began his career as an illustrator in the 1970s with the English publishing house Fleetway, drawing the comic strip Spy 13 under a pseudonym.
He later produced stories for Linus and Alter Linus such as La guerra nella Pampa and La revolución Mexicana, with his own scripts, and La guerra di Algeria with scripts by the Argentinean Norberto Buscaglia.
From 1976 to 1983, the following were published in Italy: Alvar Mayor, his most famous character, and Robin of the Stars (El Peregrino de la Estrellas) as well as the surreal Los Viajes del Marco Mono and El Reino Azul, all with scripts by Carlos Trillo.
In 1984 he wrote the scripts and drew El Cazador del Tiempo (The Hunter of Time) and El Sueñero (The Collector of Dreams) for the magazine Fierro, the latter considered by the author to be his self-referential work, where in an indefinite time fictional and mythological characters live a satirical-humorous adventure with popular references and Argentinean political characters revised by the author himself. Twenty years later, he continued with the second part of El Sueñero.
In 1985, Breccia wrote the comic strip series Metrocarguero, drawn by Domingo Mandrafina, also published for the magazine Fierro.
In Enrique Breccia’s life, it is not possible to separate his artistic vein from his political and social militancy: in 2003 he held a political post in the municipality of General Alvarado ( province of Buenos Aires ) writing the government programme for a social development plan for the poorest classes in the municipal district.
He has lived and worked in New York for Marvel: X-Force-Wolverine, for DC Comics: Batman-Gotham Knights-Legion Worlds, for Vertigo: Lovecraft – about the life of writer H. P. Lovecraft written by Hans Rodionoff – and the Swamp Things series.
In 2011 he moved to Italy.
Since 2014, Enrique Breccia has been contributing to the project: Schollas Ocurrentes, promoted by Pope Francis, which links technology, art and sport to foster social integration and a culture of encounter for the worldwide development of the neediest schools, regardless of race, creed or culture.
Enrique Breccia has always found his highest creative expression in oil painting; more than 600 paintings are part of his collection from 1966 to the present day.
He is currently working for the publishing house Sergio Bonelli Editore – Tex Willer special edition.

Since 2013, he lives in Spoleto, Italy.
